Mid-Atlantic guy chiming in here. After digging my poor civic out from 8-10 inches of good old powder all state of emergency long, I've just about had enough. Some of my family members work with companies that qualify for the Chrysler Friends & Family plan and I could get a pretty good deal. Any owners out there? The good news is that jeeps hold their value better than just about anything this side of a floridian octogenarian's Lexus.

Yes, a MT Jeep is fun. And not to generalize to greatly, but a MT makes most vehicles fun. (Former MT Jeep Wrangler owner) I wish I could shove a 6spd MT into my Yukon XL

i don't care for jeeps with minivan engines, but i could powerslide all day in my '97 that had the 4.0 inliner/5spd. it would pull wheelies too, if you abused it right.

oh, but it was a soft top, so it was awful on roadtrips, and the jeep softtop was shitty, so i had to buy an aftermarket... gas mileage was about 12, it shat a clutch after a few years...i miss it.

Fun? Yes.
Refined with good road manners? Not so much.

Jeeps hold their value more than they should . A buddy of mine had one that kept crapping out (ECU problems, radiator issues), finally got fed up with it. He traded it in for a Sonic and got basically the same thing he paid for it 3 years ago.

I had an MT TJ and have driven my friend's MT JK many times. I could write a book about how fun they are but I'll give you the short version.
Buy one! Tons o' fun, you won't be disappointed.

We've got a JK Unlimited with the incredibly-slush box. I'm familiar with the handling or lack thereof. I've heard they're incredibly different with a stick however, and that's the pertinent question at hand thankfully. I wasn't expecting grounded to the ground. (insert automotive meme of choice)

I'd be getting a hard or dual top most likely. Our hard top 4 door does okay on the Philly - Boston haul up the NJ turnpike, etc.

That's the logic I was going by. A wheelbarrow with a slick 6spd would probably be awesome, a car that's supposed to be awesome with a stick should be incredibly awesome.

exactly what I thought and was looking for. Every now and again "sure bet" cars that seem to be all sorted sometimes don't pan out as well in real life for DD purposes, but I think it's definitely a good call.

I have a 6MT Liberty. Same transmission as the Wranglers, different engine. Yes it's more fun to drive than a comparable small-ish SUV, but it's definitely no GTI. As far as the actual transmission goes, shifting is slow and heavy. Takes a bit to get used to, and it hates the cold.
Where it shines for me is in snow. Coupled with a good set of A/T tires, I've had zero issues traversing any snow covered roads in the Northeast. I park on the street, and there's no need to shovel myself out, just put it in 4x4 and go. The new Jeeps have a Brake Lock Diff, which is just a fancy word for traction control that applies the brakes to a spinning wheel. Works great, and the ESP has saved me from certain death a few times as well.
As for buying, the "employee pricing" plan is 1% under invoice. Go to your preferred 3rd party site to get invoice pricing on the model you want, before you go to the dealer. Just be careful that you don't get gang banged on your trade in to counter-act the employee pricing.

I test drove a base Wrangler Sport with a manual and pentastar for a few hours one day and loved. It needed a limited slip badly but it was a whole lot of fun.

Wranglers hold their value very well and they're good off road and in snow. That's pretty much it in terms of what they're good for.
Just returned the 2011 when the lease ended. Good riddance.

I think everybody should own a Jeep at least once in their life.
Sounds like now is the right time for you!

our '09 Unlimited Sport X has been doing well by us so far, but we are also servicing before recommended intervals and it sees very little offroad. (light dune driving at the most)

The snow thing is the biggest issue for me. School needs to be attended and slipping and sliding front wheels (in spite of snow tires and delicate throttle) needs to end. & yeah, they offer both truecar & 1% under. We've got a wrangler from the same dealer network as is, they're not actually all that sleazy as far as the stealership spectrum goes. Thanks for the heads up though.

He wasn't hard on it, and I feel like it only had around 50,000 miles. Bad luck I suppose.

My 4 door is pretty okay on the turnpike up until about 85-ish.
